New immigrants will be diverted to five Australian Regional Areas by the Scott Morrison Government. This is even as the Treasury relies on immigration for boosting tax revenues and economic growth.
The plan was revealed by Alan Tudge the Minister for Population in his first interview after being elevated to the Cabinet. He said that that immigration was a crucial issue that impacted the results of the Federal Elections held in May. The suburban areas in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne have asked for increasing infrastructure and lesser immigrants said the Minister.
The Minister for Population said that the new immigrants to Australia will be directed to the 5 regional areas. These will be the focus of the arrangements for council and business sponsorship designed to eliminate the east coast of the population pressures. This is by drawing more new immigrants to the regions, said Tudge.
The regions that will receive the Designated Area Migration Agreements are:
- Kalgoorlie-Boulder
- Far-north Queensland
- Regional South Australia
- Adelaide
- South-west Victoria
Dubbo in NSW is another Australian Regional area that is immediately in need of workers said Tudge. Chinese speaking Scuba Instructors are among the workers that are in shortage in the far-north Queensland, he added. It will not be present on the list of skills shortages nationally said the Minister. However, it is a highly crucial role that needs to be catered for the Tourism Sector that is booming there, he added.
The Department of Home Affairs figures reveals that non-regional Skilled Immigration Australia Visas have increased annually under the Coalition Government. However, those allocated for the regions declined to 10,198 in 2017 from 20,000 in 2013, as quoted by the SMH.
The shifting of Tudge into the Treasury Ministry will bridge the gap between the Infrastructure Planning and Treasury. This was the feature of the population policy in the last 10 years. It coincides with the setting up of a Population Centre of Excellence in the department. This is for enabling the Treasury to scrutinize the economic and social factors in immigration.
Notwithstanding the target, statistics reveal that 270,000 provisional and PR Visa immigrants will arrive in Australia in 2019. This is an increase over the 259,000 in 2018.
Alan Tudge said that the growth of the economy needs to be balanced. It must be acknowledged that the big cities in Australia have major pressures, he added. The issue is not about always overarching the Australian growth figures. It is about the distribution of this growth, explained Tudge.
