Around 752,725 Indian students are studying Overseas informed the External Affairs Minister of State in India Retired Gen VK Singh. These are enrolled in diverse universities across 90 nations, added the Minister.
The latest report by Business Standard has revealed that flow of Indian students to the US declined by 30% for the year 2018-19. The report elaborates that US Visa curbs could be the major reason for this decline, as quoted by the Eastern Eye Biz.
There are two crucial factors contributing to the decrease in Indian students in the US. These are the US economy and the visa regulations. Thus a 30% shift from the US to Canada is being witnessed. The Canada PR process is much easier while compared to that of the US PR.
The Canadian economy may not be as large as the US as of now. Nevertheless, Indian students are opting for studying overseas in Canada and other destinations. Increase in the cost of education is another factor resulting in the decline of US Study Visa applications from India.
Just a few years ago, out of 100 Indian students, 80 to 90 would apply only for US Study Visa. Only the rest would apply for Canada Study Visa. The proportion has changed drastically now. Currently, 50 apply only to the US, 40 apply to both the US and Canada. Remaining apply for only Canada Study Visa.
Canada has 124,000 Indian students as of now. It is followed by Australia with 87, 115 students from India. Other major overseas study destinations for Indian students include Saudi Arabia and the UAE. These have 70, 800 and 50,000 students from India respectively. New Zealand has 30,000 students while the UK had 16, 550 Indian students in the year 2016-17.
