The IELTS score required for Canadian immigration

Canadian immigration has a mandatory aspect in the form of a language test. Applicants with abilities in the English language will need a test score in IELTS or CELPIP. The score required for Canadian immigration will depend on the applicant’s targeted program.

The International English Language Testing SystemIELTS is the world’s most renowned test for the English language. It grades the candidates for 4 sections – Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading.

The results of the IELTS test correspond to the CLB score – Canadian Language Benchmark. It is one of the 2 tests accepted for English proficiency by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. The other test accepted by IRCC is CELPIP – Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program.

All Canadian immigration programs mandate minimum score to qualify. Some programs also offer more points to candidates for achieving higher language scores. Select programs also mandate higher test scores based on the profession of the candidate.

For instance, Medical professions mandate test score of CLB 7 to

. The required scores may even be as low as CLB 4 for some Provincial Nominee Programs that target demand occupations.

It must be noted here that candidates with a high level of English may not need French and vice versa. Programs for immigration to Canada normally ask for proficiency in either English or French. Proficiency implies abilities at an Intermediary level in the combination of understanding, speaking, writing and reading English.

Nevertheless, the Express Entry system offers points for candidates for their proficiency in both English and French. If you know both the languages, more points will be incurred to your profile. This is not a mandatory requirement although, as quoted by the CIC News.
