It is common knowledge that when you want to move abroad for work or study you need to prove your English proficiency. To prove your language proficiency you need to take up the IELTS test.

Test takers often have a lot of questions regarding the test. Here are answers to some of the FAQs about the IELTS Listening Module.

  1. Can I write all my answers in Capital Letters? Will I be marked wrong if I do so? For example, if the answer is 16, can I write SIXTEEN or do I have to write sixteen?

You may write your answers in either upper or lower case as per IELTS Listening Advice. Hence, it is up to you how you want to write your answer.

  1. What is the difference between the Listening tests of IELTS Academic and IELTS General?

There is no difference between the listening tests of IELTS Academic and IELTS General. However, the Reading and Writing modules are different for both the IELTS variants.

  1. Can answers be written as short forms or acronyms?

No. Abbreviations are not accepted. For example, if the answer is South Australia, you cannot write SA.

  1. What happens if I spell a word incorrectly?

In case of incorrect spelling, you will not be awarded points. There is no partial deduction of points due to incorrect spelling. However, it has been observed that the Listening tests do not involve lengthy and complex words.

  1. Can I choose the accent of the English Language in the IELTS listening test?

No, you may not. Also, the IELTS Listening test involves more than one accent. Hence, it is wise to practice from multiple sources.

  1. Will the question paper be in front of me while I am listening?

Yes, it will. You are advised to carefully listen and jot down your answers in the slots given. You will then need to write down your final answers on the answer sheet.

  1. Can I write down my answers during pauses between sections?

Of course, you may. It is a great opportunity to mark the keywords and understand what the recording is about. How you use these pauses may actually decide your score in the end.

  1. For answers with numbers, do I write them in words or numerical?

It is up to you. For example, if the answer is 2, you may write two or 2. Both are accepted.

  1. What are the differences between the 4 sections of IELTS Listening?

The first two sections assess your ability to get by in a country where English is the first language. These sections can be about anything, like getting a call or booking a table at a restaurant.

The second section usually will involve a map or a floor plan that you need to study with care.

The 3rd and 4th sections deal with academic subjects. The last section is usually the toughest, as per The Times of India.
