How to get a Student Visa for Italy

Italy is slowly emerging as a popular destination for international students to study abroad. Known for its multicultural ambience, the country also houses some of the top Universities of the world. Affordable education is also one of the many charms of Italy attracting foreign students.

If you are a citizen of the European Union you may enter Italy with a valid passport. You will be allowed to complete a study course without the need for a Visa. You will, however, need to register with the local police station and get a Residence Permit.

If you are a national of Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, or Liechtenstein, you do not need to apply for a Residence Permit. You will, however, need to register with the local Register Office.

For non-EU students, it is mandatory to obtain a Student Visa before entering the country. You may obtain the same from the Italy Embassy or Consulate in your country of permanent residence.

What are the documents needed for a Student Visa for Italy?

The Ministry of Education, University and Research in Italy publish a list of rules for University admission for foreign students every year. It is advisable to look through the list before preparing your Student Visa application.

Here are the documents that you generally need to apply for a Student Visa for Italy:

  1. Completed Visa application form
  2. Recent passport-size photographs
  3. Passport with a validity of at least 3 months more than that of your visa
  4. Offer letter from an Italian University
  5. Proof of accommodation in Italy
  6. Proof of having sufficient funds. You will need to show at least 448.07 Euros per month for an academic year.
  7. Sufficient medical insurance to cover your stay in Italy
  8. Proof of enough funds in the case you need to go back to your home country
  9. Proof of language proficiency according to the medium of instruction of your chosen program

Can you work while studying in Italy?

EU nationals can work while studying with no need for a Visa. Non-EU nationals may work after obtaining a suitable Work Permit.

During your studies, you will only be allowed to work 20 hours a week, as per Study International.

International students who wish to apply for a Work Permit need to obtain a job offer first. They can obtain their Work Permit from the local immigration office after submitting a signed copy of their offer letter.
