Study abroad

More and more Indians are going abroad to pursue higher education. 44% increased spending towards hostel and tuition fees by Indian students between 2013 and 2018 amounted from $1.9 billion to $2.8 billion.

Though US, UK and Canada have been major study destinations, EU and Australia are also being widely considered.

This shows that scores of Indian students will continue to visit and study in these countries in the coming years as well.

Popular courses – Always

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics always have been the preferences of students from India. These are termed as STEM courses. These preferences will continue as before, as a lot of universities have blended job based curriculum along with these courses.

Other attention seeking courses

International students (Majorly Indians) are showing stronger interest towards unconventional courses like Geophysics, Marine Engineering and Game design & development, as these courses are uncommon in their homeland.

Specialized Courses – Increasing demand

With ever evolving job roles and developments in Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence and Automation, new jobs are emerging. These rapid developments compel employers to look for more skilled people in these fields.

This is the reason why, the demand for courses like Automation, Robotics and Mechatronics will keep increasing. Other courses that are gaining popularity are Infection Control and disability programs.

Preferred study Destinations

Many countries attract foreign students because of the study opportunities and work options they have to offer. Settling in these countries would give you other options like a better standard of living, free education, healthcare and many other options.

Below are the top 5 destinations which are preferred study locations for Indian students.

  1. United States of America

The US has been, and will be the first on the list of International locations for Indian students. Indians make up to 17% of overseas students studying in the US.

  1. Canada

Canada is another preferred location for Indian students because you are allowed to work after finishing your post graduate in Canada.

After the Study Direct Stream (SDS) was introduced, there is a considerable rise in the number of student Visas by Indians. This number is expected to still go up.

  1. Australia

Australian cities – Sydney and Melbourne are also preferred by Indian students. Other locations that are gaining prominence are Adelaide, Gold Coast, Northern Territory and Perth. Students prefer taking postgraduate courses as it opens doors of permanent residence in Australia.

  1. United Kingdom

The number of Indian students studying in the UK has been drastically falling down since 2012 because of the stringent ‘No stay-back’ policy. But the government has changed the policy and introduced a system where foreign students can stay in the UK for 2 more years after their study. This move would attract more and more Indian students.

  1. Other EU nations

Indian students also prefer European nations like Germany, Latvia and Ireland as other destinations of quality study.
