Australia's becoming more diverse, more people speak Hindi in Australia now Census

Highlights of Australia diversity

  • Australia observes a growth of 55.3% in Hindi-speaking people.
  • India overtakes China and New Zealand to become Australian residents’ third-largest country of birth.
  • There has been an 80.4% increase in the Punjabi language, which is the largest increase in the last five years.

Australia Bureau of Statistics

The Punjabi language has the largest increase of 80.4% in the last five years as per the census data of Australia. The census also stated that around half of the Australians had their parents born overseas, which is almost 48.2%. The largest increase in the country of birth outside Australia was stated as India. Around 2,17,963 additional people have been counted.

India crossed countries China and New Zealand to become the third-largest country after Australia and England in the list of birth. The second-largest increase in the country of birth is stated as Nepal, with an additional people 67,752. Since 2016, the Nepali-born population is doubled.

Languages spoken in Australia

People speaking a language other than English at home have increased by 7,92,062 from 2016, summing up to become over 5.5 million. Mandarin still remains the most common language apart from English used at home, with 685,274 people speaking, followed by Arabic with 367,159 people.
