A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a school that is approved by a provincial or territorial government to host foreign students. It is hard to get a study permit or a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) for an international student if their school/college does not have the DLI status.

How can I immigrate to Canada in 2022?

Letter of acceptance (LOA)

You will obtain a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) when your application sent to DLI is approved. This letter is required to submit while applying for a study permit. Ensure the letter has the following details mentioned.

  • The name and contact information of the DLI
  • Your name, date of birth, and mailing address
  • The Program of study you choose, the level of the program, duration of the study, its start date, and approximate date of completion.

Apply for a study permit

The moment you receive your LOA, you can begin applying for the study permit directly to the IRCC. Apart from this, to obtain the study permit, you need the following documents

  • Proof of financial support to support your living expenses and also cover your tuition fees in Canada
  • Police certificates
  • Medical exams, if applicable
  • Letter of explanation detailing your career goals and purposes, and ties to your home country

*Note: To apply for DLI in the province of Quebec, you are also required to have a document ‘Certificatd of Acceptation du Quebec’ (CAQ) along with your application to submit to IRCC.

How to apply for a student permit under the Student Direct Stream (SDS)?

Indian Students who are eligible to apply for the permits of study using the Student Direct Stream (SDS). The residents from a list of countries by default have study permit applications that are accelerated under this stream. The standard service that SDS takes is 20 days.

SDS provides there are more eligibility requirements. Apart from the requirements that are permitted using the normal study stream, students can apply to have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) through SDS with a bank in Canada of $10,000 CAD. Along with this. There is a requirement of language proficiency with a minimum of 6.0 on each skill of the IELTS that has writing, reading, speaking, and listening sections.

Arrival to Canada

Under a student permit, the student is allowed to work off campus for around 20 hours a week once you have reached Canada to begin the study program. This can happen during the study of regular semesters and full-time study even during the breaks such as summers or winter holidays. You can opt for multiple jobs without having a limit to fill in the hours.

The moment your study program ends, you will not be allowed to work in Canada as a student and required to apply for a work permit if you are willing to stay and work in Canada.
