In an announcement, the Government of Vietnam has said that it was extending its visa waiver programme for passport holders from Britain for single-entry stays lasting up to 15 days. This would be applicable until 30 June, 2017.

Introduced first on 1 July 2015, the scheme is also available to the citizens of Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

Vietnam’s General Statistics Office is quoted by Travel Daily Media as saying that 4.7 million people visited the country in the first half of 2016, recording a rise of 21.3 percent compared to the same time last year. Annual tourism revenues have reportedly increased by 22 percent to £6.8 billion.

The visa waiver programme was extended soon after the introduction of a daily nonstop service between London and Hanoi. Vietnam’s national carrier added a flight on Thursdays from Hanoi in addition to the SkyTeam member’s existing six flights on 23 June, 2016.

Vietnam Airlines, which operates the UK’s only non-stop flights to Vietnam, runs the B787-9 Dreamliner from Heathrow. The flights offer overnight journeys in both directions, besides onward connections through a network of over 40 destinations in Asia, which include 23 within Vietnam and Indochina, in addition to Japan, China and Taiwan.
