Immigrants’ boost construction boom in Germany

A high inflow of migrants to Germany has given rise to a construction boom in Germany, the fourth largest economy in the world.

Wsj.com quotes the German Federal Statistical Office, or Destatis, as saying on 18 August that the first six months of this year had seen building permits for dwellings increase by around 30 percent when compared with the same period a year ago.

According to Destatis, the largest increase in construction permits was registered for apartments located in residential homes, including accommodation for asylum seekers and refugees

Totally, approvals for the construction of around 183,000 new dwellings were given in the first half of 2016. It is said to be the highest in number since 2000 when its first half saw 185,000 permits being issued.

The construction boom comes in the wake of migrants flocking to Germany in 2015, with people fleeing war, and attendant economic sufferings from the regions of the Middle East, Africa and western parts of Asia.

Germany attracted around 2.14 million people last year, with people being lured by its robust economy and a welcoming asylum regime. Destatis stated in July that net immigration to the West European country was 1.14 million as fewer than one million people returned to their countries.
