ACT in Australia has the 2nd highest population growth

The Australian Capital Territory recorded the 2nd highest population growth in Australia last year. However, it also had the highest percentage increase in deaths and a reduction in births in the country.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the population growth in the territory was 1.8%. There were 423,800 people in the ACT in 2018 including 7,574 new residents who chose to settle in the ACT.

The Australian Capital Territory recorded the same percentage of growth rate as Queensland. Victoria had the highest percentage of growth rate in 2018 with 2.2%.

Almost half (53%) of the population growth of the ACT came from net overseas migration representing 4,014 people.

43% of the ACT’s population came from natural growth which is births minus deaths representing 3,247 people.

Only 4 states in Australia showed a positive net interstate migration percentage. There was a small increase of 313 people which constitutes 4% of the population increase. The other states which saw an increase in interstate migration were Tasmania, Queensland and Victoria.

2018 saw the total number of births increase in most states in Australia. However, ACT recorded the biggest decrease in the birth rate at 7%.

The number of deaths in half the states in Australia also saw a decrease. However,  ACT recorded the highest increase in the death rate at 3.7%, as per the Riot Act.

As per data released by the ABS, Australia saw a population growth of 1.7% in 2018. The Australian population had grown to 25.2 million by 31st December 2018.

Australia saw a record number of births last year at 314,900. 161,900 of those born were male while 153,000 were female. The previous record was in 2012 with 312,200 births.

Overseas migration in Australia accounted for 61.4% of the population growth. Natural increase attributed to a 38.6% increase in population growth.

In 2018, 248,400 people migrated to Australia in comparison to 241,700 in 2017. This can be attributed to a decrease in overseas migration departures and steady overseas migration arrivals.
