Although most politicians have made this issue their political plank, that globalisation, abetted by quicker modes of travel and communication, is here to stay has to be accepted by its harshest critics too.
Free trade is engendering constructive relations between countries and allowing them, in fact, to prosper more. Even a Communist country like China has realised this, and is prospering as it has opened up markets and moving towards a less restrictive economy.
When goods and services are exchanged between countries, they will focus more on commerce and less on burning bridges with other countries. Whenever the US shuts its markets to protect certain industries, its moves have backfired and affected its own citizens. America can afford to renegotiate and ensure fair trade without hurting its interests in any way. For instance, the Trans-Pacific Partnership which America has with eleven nations in the Far East will do it more good than harm because scuttling it would make them turn towards China. The US can ill afford to take such a stance now.
When people come to the US, they do so as they are very well aware of the fact that no other country in the world offers fewer barriers than it to achieve economic prosperity. If the migrants can come into this country and become rich by offering services or products that the American public desires or needs, they will continue to come in and create a win-win relationship.
Of course, what the US needs to distinguish between are illegal immigrants and the highly-skilled legal migrants, who will take both themselves and Americans forward economically. This would weed out most of the problems afflicting the US.
Indians have borne the fruits of America’s immigrant policy; it is no surprise that many persons of Indian origin (PIOs), such as Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, or Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo, have carved a niche for themselves and also helped US to flourish.
