While the media brouhaha continues over the attacks against Indian students in Australia, the Indians have to wake upto the fact that these attacks were not racially motivated. Yes they were disappointing, but it was the act of a handful of people who are the general miscreants lurking in the dark and have nothing to do with a particular ethnic race or group.
If it’s a worst place to live on earth then the big question is that “Why are all the students and migrants still there”? Or “Why are people not coming back once their studies are done” or “Why people are still opting to attaining high ranks there”? What has happened there is certainly shameful but it is not enough to judge the country and dissolving the vast opportunities lying there on the basis of these events. Riots happen in India too and they often happen at the drop of a hat. So dogmatically even India can be painted as racist. That way, no one is safe anywhere.
Australian government has asserted that this is not a hatred war against Indians. Infact, Indian students are very bright and intelligent and they are adored for this quality of theirs in Australia. The Indian students are being awarded the scholarship for proving their mettle in various universities and Indian professionals are being crowned the glory of high level positions and salaries for their exceptional work in Australia.
A person might begin with deep local grievances, but quickly learn to give them a global meaning. This is the nature of liquid modernity, where space collapses and it is possible to plug into the grievances of antipodean communities, even virtual communities, instantly. Added to that we have the Indian media who after reporting the primary issues, began to encroach on and provoke the issue of living in Australia.
Indian migrants are considered exemplary migrants because of their ability to integrate into the wider community and this is proved by the fact that there has been an Indian migrant community in Australia for probably more than 100 years. The bottom line is Australia needs intelligent students, skilled migrants, doctors and nurses in remote areas, to generate economic growth .A fact, enough to encourage even the skilled Dalits from India to forge their destiny! What is so despicable about that! So all the critics of Australia need to grow up.
The Australian High commission have assured of stringent measures that will be taken care for the prevention of hate crimes in their land. We have to remember that countries like Australia need our students and brains to keep their country’s exponential growth. There are great places in Australia where every weekend you have a choice of dozens of festivals and other events where people of all nations gather to enjoy the good life. If you come to visit, join in; contribute the best of what you and your culture have to give. If you’re keen to escape an overcrowded country, wanting more space and nature, be glistened by the bright blue skies and drench in sunshine Australia might be the country for you.
