Migrate to Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world. Over the years it has become a popular destination for immigrants. The current population of Canada is nearly 35 million and its GDP is 50.23 USD.

Recently Canada introduced its immigration targets for 2021-23 where it is planning to welcome 1,233,000 new permanent residents over the next three years to help propel an economic recovery after the negative impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Apart from this, immigrants are required to offset the effect of an aging population and a low birth rate.

The target figures indicate that Canada will be focusing on high immigration targets— more than 400,000 new permanent residents to be welcomed by Canada in 2021-2023.

Year Immigrants
2021 401,000
2022 411,000
2023 421,000

Permanent residency options

For permanent residency, Canada offers several immigration programs.  Some well- known immigration programs are the Express Entry program, the Provincial Nominee Program, the Quebec Skilled Workers’ Program, etc. The most popular among these is the Express Entry program.

Each Canada immigration program has its own set of criteria. If you are applying under a particular program you must meet the specific requirements to qualify.

However, there are some general minimum requirements common to all these programs. To be eligible, an applicant must –

  • Be above 18 years of age,
  • Possess minimum educational qualifications equal to higher secondary education in Canada,
  • Score the minimum marks in language proficiency tests such as IELTS/CELPIP, and
  • Have minimum one year of work experience.

Applicants with a valid job offer in Canada are given high priority.

Work opportunities in Canada

There are good job opportunities in Canada because a major percentage of existing skilled workers belong to the baby-boomer generation which means they will be retiring in a few years and companies will need the workforce to replace them. Unfortunately, the Canadian population has not grown in the required pace where they will be skilled workers to replace those who are retiring. Hence the country is looking at foreign workers for replacement.

The following sectors are expected to have considerable number of job openings over the next six years.

  • Healthcare
  • Business and finance
  • Engineering
  • Technology
  • Legal
  • Community and social service

If you wish to work in Canada, you will need a work visa. The work visa is known as the work permit in Canada. You will have to apply for a work permit if you are not a permanent resident but have a job from a Canadian employer.

There are two types of work permits – open work permit and an employer specific work permit. An open work permit basically allows you to work for any employer in Canada. With an open work permit you can work for any employer except for those companies that do not comply with labor requirements. The employer specific work permit as the name suggests is a permit that allows you to work for a specific employer.

Migration to Canada as a student

Canada has become a popular destination for international students. The top reasons why students choose Canada include the quality of its education system. There are various courses and programs students can choose from. The universities here provide numerous research opportunities. Students can work while doing their course and have good internship opportunities.

International students who work here have the possibility of immigration after completing their course. They can apply for a PR visa once their course is over.

The Canadian government offers options for international students to stay after their course and gain some work experience. The IRCC provides a Post-Graduate Work Permit Program. Under this program, international graduates can get an open work permit valid for three years. They can work for any employer in this period. This also gives them the skilled work experience which is crucial to the success of their PR visa application.
