Birthright Citizenship

The latest survey by Angus Reid Institute has revealed that 2/3rds of Canadians want that the laws for birthright citizenship are changed. ARI is a non-profit independent research organization in Canada. The existing laws stipulate that anyone born in Canada is a citizen. 60% of Canadians want this law to be changed.

64% of the respondents said that children born to parents in Canada on Tourist Visas must not be offered Citizenship. Meanwhile, 24% who participated in the survey said that it must be given, as quoted by the Pique News Magazine.

55% of the survey participants said that citizenship must be given if both the parents of the child are on Work Visas in Canada. 40% of the respondents said that citizenship must be given if both the parents of the child are on Student Visas.

40% of the participants of the survey said that the overall policy for birthright is good. 33% of them said that it is a bad policy.

The report adds that concerns of Canadians on birth tourism are influenced by 2 factors. These are their political affiliation and age.

Older Canadians above 55 years consider it to be a more serious issue. Meanwhile, those below 55 years of age are equally divided.

2/3rds of NDP and Liberal inclined Canadian nationals said that birth tourism is not a serious concern. However, those inclined towards the CPC consider it to be grave by the ratio of 1:3.

50% of Canadian citizens favour overhauling the complete system. Meanwhile, 28% want just specific alterations for policies of birth tourism.
