The aroma of Coffee can help people to enhance their performance in the GMAT analytical section claims a study. GMAT is a computer adaptive test mandated by several Overseas Business Schools.
The study has been headed by US Stevens Institute of Technology Professor Adriana Madzharov. It highlights the secret force of aroma and the cognitive boost it can offer on analytical tasks. Thus, it is expected that students will perform better on the tasks due to the aroma, as quoted by the Times of India.
Adriana Madzharov said that the coffee like aroma assisted people to enhance their performance in analytical tasks. Also, the candidates also believed that they would perform better and both these aspects are interesting, added Madzharov.
The study has demonstrated that this expectation was at least partially accountable for their enhanced performance said the Professor. Smelling a coffee-like aroma that had no caffeine has a similar impact on drinking. This indicates a placebo effect of coffee aroma, added the researchers.
The research work has been published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. In this, the team led by Madzharov administered a GMAT algebra test of 10 questions in a Computer lab to 100 UG Business students. These were divided into 2 groups.
One group attempted the test in the ambiance of coffee-like aroma. Another group attempted the test in a room without the aroma. It was found that the group in the room with the coffee aroma secured much higher scores. The results indicate that performance expectations can be explained by beliefs that coffee aroma alone makes people more energetic and alert.
