Edinburgh is considered to be the most expensive UK city for students, says the Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS’s) Student Living Index.

On the other hand, Portsmouth is the least expensive city. Liverpool and Newcastle are the second and third least expensive cities respectively.

According to the Sunday Post, the index saw 2,500 students being surveyed across the UK to identify the most and least expensive places to study out of the 25 university cities across Britain. Various factors such as the cost of living, accommodation costs and money students could earn while working part-time were taken into account.

The study took into consideration how much expenditure students incurred for going out and how much time they devoted to studying. On an average, weekly rent in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, was the highest at around £112, and income was low averaging around £995. Both these factors together contributed in making it the most expensive place to study.

Portsmouth, Liverpool and Newcastle were the most affordable British cities with the average accommodation costing £109 and also allowing students to earn incomes averaging about £1,515, £1,425 and £1,421, respectively. The rents in these three cities are said to be lower than the UK average.

Students at Cambridge and Oxford spent the most time studying, with 47 and 40 hours on an average, respectively, which is above the British average of close to 31 hours. Leicester students, on the other hand, spent only 24 hours a week studying.

Students in Newcastle spend the highest on alcohol at £9.32 and Birmingham students’ expenditure on spirits was the least at £4.12.

The other more affordable cities to live in the UK are Belfast, Exeter, York, Cardiff, and Nottingham, among others.
