The enrolment of overseas students in Canada continues to soar and their numbers reached record 572,000 as of 31 December 2018. This is an increase of 16% over the previous year. The Federal Government had set a target of 450,000 plus overseas students in Canada by 2022 in 2014. This roughly doubled their numbers from 2011.
However, Canada surpassed the target by 2017. This is as per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The numbers of overseas students in Canada at the postsecondary level was 435,415. This represented an increase of 18%, as quoted by the University Affairs CA.
Canadian Bureau for International Education – CBIE CEO and President Larissa Bezo expressed her views on the development. We are seeing increasingly amongst our member institutions including Universities real proactive efforts for diversifying their student populations. The fruits of these efforts are now evident, added Bezo.
It is common now at Universities in Canada that overseas students constitute a minimum of 15% of enrolments. In some Universities sit is even higher.
Lakehead University has 1,400 overseas students is on its way to meet its target of 2,000 overseas students by 2023 much earlier. This represents 20% of its total enrolments and it had just 150 overseas students just 9 years back.
Assistant Vice-President, Enrolment Management at University of Windsor Chris Busch observed that the immigration policy of Canada is the chief propellant. It permits overseas students to work during and upon completion of their studies. This offers a pathway to Canada PR Visa, he added.
Around 60% of overseas students in Canada plan to obtain the PR Visa according to the survey of CBIE in 2018. Canada’s reputation for safety and quality along with the low Canadian dollar has also contributed to its popularity.
Lanre Adenekan is a 33 years old student in Canada from Nigeria. He is studying a Master’s degree in Finance, International Accounting, and Management at the University of Windsor. Canada has comparatively affordable tuition fees for a similar quality of education said Adenekan. This is in comparison with other popular destinations like the US and the UK he added.
I chose the University of Windsor as it offers small classes said Adenekan. Its curriculum is in line with my plans to advance into executive positions in banking when I return to Nigeria, he added.
