Eesti Päevaleht daily, citing an official at the Ministry of the Interior, said that with the launch of digital nomad visas, Estonia could attract about 1,400 remote workers on to its shores per year.

The new kind of visa’s target group is e-residents, 1,400, or 10 percent, of who per year would arrive in Estonia.

Killu Vantsi, an official at the Citizenship and Migration Policy Department of the Ministry of the Interior, said that it was like predicting future. She believed that more people could come to the Northern European country.

Though there are already quite a few Digital Nomads in Estonia, most of them are residing there on a tourist visa. But in such a scenario, they should not be ideally working while staying in the country. To extend their stay, these kinds of people need to seek employers.

Vantsi was quoted by BNS as saying that there were no better options now.

Vantsi feels that digital nomads would indirectly contribute to the country’s economy by consuming local goods and services.

She said that Estonia would, however, prefer talented entrepreneurs to find employment in Estonia or start a business to stay here.

She said that as was the case with all other visas, applicants would need to go through background checks. Vantsi said that it was necessitated by the fact that Estonia needed to make sure that migrants do not enter the country illegally or its public order and security are not under any threats.
