Get to know about Canada’s new Immigration Law: Bill C-21

Bill C-21 is a new immigration law being currently passed through the Canadian parliament to track the people leaving the country. It helps government to track those who are no longer entitled for social benefits or permanent residency because of spending time outside the country.

However, this issue has sparked a controversy due personal information shared between US and Canada.

The American customs official would share information about the people entering Unites states with the government of Canada through this bill. This information pertains to their personal details on passport and the location and date of departure from Canada. The bill has a significant roleas it will be able to track the time of permanent residents stay in Canada.

Bill C-21 is tabled in the Canadian parliament awaiting approval from the Senate. If the bill is passed, it would be easy for Canadian government to tack the length of stay of the residents in Canada.

A person must reside in Canada at least for 730 days over a period of 5 years in order to attain permanent resident status.

A permanent resident has the right to move to other country leaving Canada provided he must be physically present for a minimum designated period. The permanent resident risks losing their status if they fail to satisfy the above conditions.

Any permanent resident who has plans afoot to become a citizen or maintain status, this bill is very important. Permanent residents spending most of their time in United States should ascertain that they meet the residency requirements.

The above law won’t pose a problem to those who satisfy the residency requirements as a permanent resident. They need to carefully plan their length of trips outside Canada.
