Immigrant employers created 1.3 million jobs in 2014, a study by the Bertelsmann Foundation revealed on 11 August.

In 2005, they were responsible for creating 947,000 employment opportunities. The Local is quoted as saying that the number of immigrant entrepreneurs had also increased in one decade by around 25 percent to 709,000. The population rise, on the other hand, in Germany was below nine percent.

Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin and Hesse regions were the beneficiaries with most opportunities by immigrants being created there as against Hamburg, Lower Saxony or Rhineland Palatinate, which saw fewer jobs being created. Another notable feature was the fact that the types of industries immigrant entrepreneurs were creating jobs in were changing too.

Armando Garcia Schmidt, the head of the study, said that people often associate immigrants as people who open kiosks and Chinese restaurants. That is misplaced according to him and he said that such clichés ought to be dismissed.

The number of immigrant entrepreneurs working in trade and hospitality sectors fell by 10 percent between 2005 and 2014 to 28 percent now. It implied that more immigrants were switching over to other industries. Garcia Schmidt said that they ranged from tax consultants to startups to engineers. Self-employed immigrants earned €2,167 per month on an average, which is 40 percent more than immigrant salaried workers.
