The enrolment of Indian Students is now increasing at UK Universities. However, just a decade ago, the UK had been accepting fewer students from Asia, especially from India.
Nevertheless, the trends are now reversing when it comes to the enrolment of Indian students in the UK. The UK has been approving more Student Visas for Indians than in the past. This is evident from the academic year 2017-18 when 19, 750 UK Study Visas were approved for students from India.
The numbers have further increased in 2018-19 when roughly 39,900 UK Student Visas were approved for Indian students. The typical cities chosen by them include those in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England.
Majority of the Indian students are opting for Post-graduate programs at UK Universities in the above cities. Engineering and Business Management continues to remain the top subjects for students from India. Computer sciences and Biosciences are the next top favourites for pursuing a Master’s Degree in the UK.
UK Universities are also putting extra efforts and are trying to explore tie-ups with Universities in India. This is after witnessing an increase in the interest of students from India.
The Queens University in Belfast and the Essex have already collaborated with diverse Universities in India. This is for several MBA and Ph.D. programs, as quoted by the Market Industry Journal.
The most important and biggest reason for this reversal in trends is that the UK wants to increase the numbers of overseas students’ post-Brexit. It wants them to reach optimum levels by the year 2030.
New rules for overseas students permit them to remain in the UK for a maximum of 6 months upon completion of their education. The Doctoral students are permitted to remain longer for 12 months. There are demands from several quarters to increase this to 2 years.
Apart from this, the Innovator Visa and Start-up Visa have also been announced by the UK. This is for promising entrepreneurs from across the world.
Overseas students from outside the EU are required to apply for a UK Student Visa to study in the UK. They can apply for this UK Visa only if they plan to study a full-time Degree course in the UK. Part-time courses do not qualify for Study Visas. The eligibility of the applicants is assessed through a rules system based on points known as the Tier 4 UK Student Visa.
