The popularity of the UK as a study abroad destination had been declining in recent years. The UK stopped issuing the Post Study Work Visa to international students in 2012. The closure of this Visa led many Indian students to stay away from the UK. This also led to a massive decline in popularity of the UK as a preferred study abroad destination for students from other countries.
Also, international students from India and other non-EU countries need to pay three times the fee as domestic students. Tuition fees of Indian and non-EU students contributed billions to the economy of the UK. The huge disparity in fees also lessened the UK’s charm among Indian students.
Things seem to be changing for the UK at present. The number of Indian students in the UK in 2010-2011 stood at 39,090. The numbers dropped to 16,550 in 2016-17. However, the number of Indian students in the UK is again on the rise with 19,750 students in 2017-18. These figures have been released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).
The source country for the highest number of international students in the UK is China. In 2017-18, there were 106,530 Chinese students in the UK. In fact, 1 in every 3 non-European international students in the UK was from China, as per International Business Times.
Sponsored study visas granted to Indian citizens have also risen by 33% to 18,375 by September 2018. These figures are as per the statistics published by the UK Home Office in November 2018. Most Indian students prefer to pursue postgraduate education in the UK.
Vocational courses in the UK saw the least number of enrolments by Indian students. This was primarily due to the closure of a number of bogus colleges in the UK by the Govt. These colleges were found to be recruiting non-EU students for non-academic purposes.
