The Canada Program Live-in Caregiver is a part of the TFWP – Provisional Overseas Worker Program. It is aimed at enabling Canadians to hire overseas nationals. This is for the purpose of receiving home care for disabled or seniors or childcare.
Individuals with 2 years of job experience on an LCP Work visa could apply for transitioning to Canada PR. One of the criterions was that the caregivers dwell with the family that hired them. This left them defenseless for exploitation such as not paid overtime, poor conditions of work etc.
Critics thus contended so as the program to be revised to safeguard the well-being of caregivers. This was because their status was dependent on their Canadian employer, as quoted by the CIC News.
The live-in/residence clause was later eliminated. But a new Work Visa and Impact Assessment for Labor market was made mandatory if LCP immigrants decided to move out. They would also be no longer considered to be under LCP and become ineligible to apply for Canada PR under the program.
Fresh applications under LCP are no longer accepted by the IRCC. Those who intend to work as caregivers must now apply under normal Work Visa supported by LMIA. This is in case they do not already have an LCP Work Visa.
You may be qualified to apply for Canada PR under Program Live-in Caregiver if you satisfy the below requirements:
- 24 months full-time authorized live-in work experience in Canada (or)
- 3,900 hours endorsed permanent live-in work experience within at least of 22 months as well as up to 390 hours overtime in Canada and
- The work experience should be obtained within 4 years of your arrival date
