The Medical Council of India has decided to grant a one-time exemption to medical aspirants who did not appear for the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) 2018. This decision was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The decision has made medical aspirants heave a sigh of relief.
The exemption, however, is only for those students who had not registered for NEET 2018. Such students would be able to enroll in foreign Universities subject to meeting the below conditions:
- The candidates would need to provide an undertaking that they had not registered for NEET 2018
- The candidates would need to procure the certificate of eligibility from MCI before enrolling in a foreign University
- Deciding on the genuineness of the undertaking would be at the discretion of the MCI
For candidates submitting forged undertakings, strict action permissible by law would be taken by the MCI. It may also cancel the eligibility certificate of the candidate.
Many students in India are not interested in appearing for NEET as medical studies require high investment in India. MCI issued a public notice making NEET mandatory for students aspiring to study medicine abroad on March 8, 2018, as per Careers360.
The NEET was scheduled sometime in May 2018 leaving students with very little time to prepare. Medical aspirants usually prepare for up to 2 years before appearing for NEET.
Intakes for most of the foreign Universities get over by September. This leaves little time for aspirants to apply to study abroad. MCI’s decision to grant exemption this year has brought cheer to many medical aspirants.
