Increase in immigrants working on 457 visas in Western Australia
Foreign workers have continued to immigrate to Western Australia on 457 temporary work visas sponsored by construction and mining industry employers in order to address Australia’s severe skills shortages. Australian immigration figures show that the number of visas granted for foreign workers going to Western Australia increased by 88 percent to 13,250 in the first 10 months of this financial year. Also, 90 percent of workers immigrating to Western Australia on the 457 visa are managers, professionals or skilled tradespeople, with most going to work in the construction and mining industry.
Australia welcomes casual migrant workers
Australia is to open its booming natural resources industry to casual foreign workers to help alleviate a chronic labour shortage that has seen wages and business costs rocket.
Immigration minister Chris Bowen last week granted the first of many expected Enterprise Migration Agreements, which allow for the short-term employment of foreign workers in the mining sector.

Canada ready to open its doors to more immigrants
The government is under huge pressure to increase immigration levels, according to Citizenship and Immigration minister Jason Kenney. Canada is ready to open its doors to expanded immigration, but only if the immigrants already here do better. Mr Kenney said he’s open to raising immigration levels as soon as he sees a turnaround in those outcomes.
Jobs, easy PRs make Indian students head for Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan province in Canada is emerging as a favourite destination for Indian students due to its simple permanent residency rules and more job opportunities. Tthe Saskatchewan provincial government too has initiated changes that could give students some time to stay put after completion of their studies, as they try to find jobs, so as to become eligible for PRs.

Construction-related skills in demand
Christchurch has become a major hub for jobs growth, particularly for those with construction-related skills, despite a real start to the earthquake rebuild remaining months away, recruitment agencies say.
Quantity surveyors, commercial and residential project managers plus machine operators with drainage and roading experience were topping a list of skills in high demand in Christchurch’s civil construction market, said Jason Walker, managing director of recruitment firm Hays.

The Home Office has said that the number of appeals had “soared” since 2000 when full appeal rights were re-introduced for family visit visas. In 2010/11 the number had risen to almost 50,000, significantly higher than the forecasted 20,000. The cost of processing these appeals was estimated at £29 million pa and was also “an absolute goldmine for immigration lawyers” said Green.
Failed visa applicants will now have to re-apply.
