MELBOURNE: Lauding New Zealand’s new migration plan which encourages skilled migrants to take up jobs outside Auckland, Indian diaspora in the country has said the move will attract more Indians.
Prime Minister John Key’s Government is putting in place extra incentives for migrants to settle outside Auckland as about half the 10,000 annual intake of skilled migrants currently settled in Auckland, country’s largest and most populous city.
Skilled workers who take jobs in the regions will have bonus points which will be used to calculate whether residency requests should be approved or denied.
Currently those who get a job offer outside Auckland get 10 bonus points towards their residence application, but from November that would triple to 30 points towards the 100 they require. They will have to commit to stay in the region for a year, up from three months now.
“Government measures to attract migrants to the regions are a good idea. It makes sense to give migrants the opportunity to use their skills to develop regional areas rather than adding to dense populations in big cities,” New Zealand Herald quoted New Zealand Indian Central Association president Harshadbhai Patel as saying yesterday.
“The measures will be successful in attracting Indians, in particular, to the regions – if they have the skills those regions require,” he said.
Patel said Indians are attracted to New Zealand scenery and people, who are easy to mix with. He says New Zealand is a safe place and Indians like the lifestyle.
Some come to visit the country having been exposed to it in films back home and end up moving here. Others come to study and stay.
