Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – IRCC has cautioned Overseas Students in Canada to be aware of scamsters. Crooks are targeting overseas students by disguising as immigration officers to extract money from them. The Government of Canada has issued a special alert in this regard.

International Students must be careful and not get deceived by the scamsters, cautioned IRCC. The thieves call over students by pretending as immigration agents. They then threaten the students with quick detention upon disregarding their demands. A few students have already transferred 1000s of dollars to the scamsters, as quoted by the Study International.

An alert has been posted on the website of the IRCC in this regard. It says that if any individual poses as an immigration officer, warns of detention or deportation or suspension of account for failing to give money, it is a scam.

The sharing of personal details or payment of money must be not made to such individuals who threaten that the immigration or visa status is in danger for failing to comply with their demands, reads the alert. IRCC never requests payment of money by contacting in person or by calls or online for averting being deported or other penalties, it adds.

In November 2017, Chinese Students in Canada were deceived and caught in a kidnapping scam. They were safely traced by the Police of Toronto after the students disappeared for more than 7 days. The authorities reported that these students had been given threat calls prior to their absconding.

The students were asked to hide. They were also asked not to use mobiles, internet, any form of social media or contact families, said Craig Brister the Constable.
