Police are warning residents in York Region to be cautious following reports of scam phone calls from people claiming to be Canadian immigration officers.
In a news release Friday, York Regional Police said that they have received “multiple” reports from people who have been contacted by fraudsters pretending to be Canadian immigration officers.
Police allege the suspects are contacting victims by phone and advising them of errors in their Immigration Canada paperwork, Victims are then instructed to wire money, or face deportation or jail time.
It appears fraudsters are targeting senior citizens and people of Southeast Asian descent, police said.
In light of the reports, police are urging residents to be cautious.
“If the situation feels suspicious, trust your instincts,” police said. “Do not be talked into providing personal information or payments by methods that you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with and call companies or agencies back to verify information.”
Those who suspect they have been a victim of fraud should contact York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 6627. To report a fraud where money has not been lost, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
