Facebook has said that America must radically refom its immigration policies if the country is going to stay competitive in the global economy.

Sheryl-SandbergSheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer at the world’s biggest social networking site, said that the US should give visas to foreign engineers who get degrees at the country’s universities.

Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer at the world’s biggest social networking site, said that the US should give visas to foreign engineers who get degrees at the country’s universities.

Authorities, she said, should be “stapling a visa to every high-tech diploma.” Facebook’s concerns echo those of a number of leading business figures, as well as New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, that immigration laws bought in after the September 11 terrorist attacks are now handing advantages to America’s key rivals.

Ms Sandberg said of overseas engineers “not only do they not take jobs from other Americans, they create jobs for other Americans if we could keep them here.”

Her comments came as Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder, this week visited Harvard University in an effort to recruit engineers. He said that the US education system is not producing enough of them.
