How to choose the right PG course to study overseas?

It is not an easy task to select the right Post-graduation or Master’s course for your study overseas. What is tougher is to ensure that the course that you select has credibility in the overseas job market.

You must be aware of what kind of PG Program you would like to pursue for your study overseas before choosing the course. It has 2 major categories:

Type #1: Taught PG programs

These courses can be in line with your Undergraduate education or in a completely new field. The qualification is usually determined by the length of a course. A Graduate Diploma has usually 60 credits while the Masters has 90 credits.

Taught programs often have a research component. This is usually during the summer and in an industry setting in some cases.

Type #2: Research PG programs

Research Masters that include MLitt’s usually take around 15 months to 4 years. This depends on whether it is a full time or part time course.

You must explore the courses in your research area if you select a research-based course. The quality of supervision and support must also be examined, as quoted by the Irish Times.

The research on the opinion of the labour market on the quality of supervision and support at this stage will be rewarding. This is when you engage with probable employers at the completion of your program.

Some of the PG Programs will facilitate an immediate transition to a Ph.D. A Doctoral degree will require a minimum of 3 years. The topic will be determined by your interest areas and those of your guide/supervisor.

Credibility and Validation

Recognition and validity are central while selecting a PG course for study overseas. In Ireland, this is done by QQI – Quality and Qualifications Ireland. It is an agency of the Department of Education and Skills that is responsible for NFQ – National Framework of Qualifications.
