If you wish to study or work abroad, especially in an English-speaking country, you will often be required to prove your English proficiency. You may need to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) for the same.

The IELTS test is divided into four modules – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Here is some important information regarding the IELTS Speaking test:

  1. The speaking test happens face-to-face with an examiner in a room
  2. There is just one speaking test. Test-takers for both the IELTS-General and IELTS-Academic have to take the same speaking test.
  3. Even if you take a computer-based IELTS test, you still have to take a face-to-face speaking test with an examiner
  4. Your speaking test is recorded. You may request for a remark if you wish later on.
  5. The speaking test is an informal test
  6. The examiner taking your interview determines the results of your test once it is over
  7. The average time for a speaking test is between 11 and 14 minutes
  8. The examiner controls the length and time of your answers
  9. The speaking test comprises of:
  • Greeting and ID check
  • Part 1: Questions and answers that may last between 4 and 5 minutes
  • Part 2: A talk for about 1 to 2 minutes with rounding off questions for 1 minute
  • Part 3: Discussion for about 4 to 5 minutes
  1. You are scored as per the below criteria:
  • Fluency and Cohesion: 25%
  • Vocabulary: 25%
  • Grammar: 25%
  • Pronunciation: 25%

Follow the below tips if you want to score well on your speaking test of IELTS:

  1. Do not be shy
  2. Try and enjoy your chat with the examiner
  3. Remember that your knowledge is not being tested, only your English is. Hence, your ideas are not very important.
  4. Speak with confidence to showcase your English speaking skills
  5. Simple ideas explained through good English helps you get a better score
  6. Think of your experiences related to the topic and try to include those in your conversation. For example, if the topic is a museum, you may want to recall your visit to a museum that you have been to or would like to go to.
  7. Speaking what you actually feel, or as they say “from the heart” makes your English better
  8. Practice expressing yourself using your own language instead of memorizing lines
  9. Practice talking about your views and experiences
