IT and engineering employment rose in September compared to August, but only slightly, according to a new report.
There were about 4.7 million IT jobs in September, up 0.1 percent from August, according to IT and engineering staffing trade association TechServe Alliance, which analyzed Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Management and technical consulting services saw the biggest growth within IT jobs, up about 5.2 percent from one year ago, compared to data processing, hosting and related services which experienced 2.3 percent growth over the year.
Compared to the same month one year ago, IT employment is up 3.6 percent, adding about 160,800 workers, the report said.
Engineering jobs also grew slightly in September — up 0.1 percent to about 2.5 million since August. Engineering employment has also grown about 1.5 percent since the same time one year ago, adding about 37,500 jobs.
“While there is still very much a shortage of professionals with high-demand skill sets, the overall growth rate for IT and Engineering jobs remained modest in September,” Mark Roberts, chief executive of TechServe Alliance, said in a statement.
