Shell Australian Chief calls for more immigration-friendly policies

Andrew Smith, Shell Australia Chairman, has urged for higher levels of immigration to support the growth of population, adding that the industry had failed to adequately support an immigration policy that would boost the economy.

At a Melbourne Mining Club lunch, Mr. Smith was quoted by The Australian Business Review as saying that Australian immigration in the 21st century was often surrounded by hysterical arguments.

The industry has failed to push for an immigration programme that would be an economic incentive to drive the inactive economy, he said.

Emphasising that he was advocating neither more nor fewer visas for temporary work (skilled) (subclass 457), he said that he was talking about the population growth in Australia’s hinterland.

He said it was the need of the hour for industry leaders to support a sensible mix of both talented and humanistic migration, and then support the advocacy with important decisions that add to the legacy.

The only way, according to Mr Smith, to foster diverse economic growth was by promoting population growth that would tap the potential of the country’s north.

Referring to the immigration heritage of gold rush towns of Australia such as Bendigo, he stressed that the challenge was to unlock similar possibilities in towns like Broome and Gladstone.
