The UK government has been offering non-European Union graduate students an opportunity to apply for a Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa through UK universities. The University of Essex was awarded 20 places for 2014-15 to enable proactive and entrepreneurial students to seek an extension of their time in the UK to start businesses that could benefit the domestic economy and beyond. Aspirants can apply for the visa after completing their degrees from the universities as long as their institutions endorse them.
Jay Mitra, professor of business enterprise and innovation and director of MBA and executive programmes at Essex Business School (EBS), says, “Students from our business school are eligible to apply to the government for this visa. We select students based on the quality of their application, work experience and an individual action plan (IAP). We look at how they present themselves as future leaders of innovative enterprises and sustainable businesses.”
Applicants are required to present a business plan, which is scrutinised by experts at the B-school and by external representatives. “If the application process is successful, then that validates the application for the visa.”
