Tips and tricks to score in PTE speaking

PTE read aloud question comes first in the speaking section test of the PTE. During the actual PTE exam, the section will consist of 6 questions. Looking at the question, all the students feel it is simple at first.  But when it comes to exam day, when unfamiliar words are asked to be pronounced it brings down their confidence.

Question details

You’ll have 30-40 seconds to prepare for the recording, depending on the passage. When the time is done, a beep sound is played, and you will start recording your voice audibly. Don’t start speaking before the microphone starts, or it won’t record your voice.

Scoring factors

Content: Have you included all the words according to the passage given? Adding and removing the extra word would have a negative effect on your ranking. Therefore, try reading the passage as it is in the question.

Oral Fluency: Can you talk at a normal and moderate pace? Oral fluidity is scored by assessing smoothness of the flow, phrasing and tension. Replay and delay will lower your score.

Pronunciation: Can you use the correct sound of speech as the language’s regular speaker? This determines whether others can easily understand your voice.

Useful tips

Prepare yourself during 30-40 seconds of preparation time by mocking the answer. Try to read the article aloud as if you are actually giving the real answer. Seek to practice words that you think are new or difficult to pronounce. This will train the brain to utter the difficult terms before the recorder begins.

Before the recorder starts, the other function you should perform is to divide the article into a coherent chunk to boost your oral fluency in the PTE read-aloud portion. Taking the necessary pause will give the whole paragraph proper meaning which will improve your enabling skills.

Intonation is also a key factor in the PTE read-aloud section to score high. Stress the words that help to express meaning when you read the text by reading them in a slightly louder voice and putting emphasis on key syllables.

Be positive, loud and clear enough to hear your voice on a monitor. A confident speaker tends to read the newspaper in front of the mirror as if you are trying to get the message out in the auditorium to a broader audience. It will help you conquer the fear of the stage, too.

• Do not pause, or repeat the word.
• Don’t add any additional words or letters other than the original text.
• Try doing away with the ‘Umming and Urring’ while talking.
• Ignore the errors, and keep reading the next word.
