There are four parts in the IELTS exam:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Here are some tips to help you score well in each section of the test:

Listening

This part of the test consists of four parts:

Part 1 — a conversation between two speakers

Part 2 — a monologue or a speech related to an everyday situation

Part 3 — a conversation among two to three speakers in an educational or a training context

Part 4 — a monologue on an academic subject

You will have to listen to these parts and then answer the questions that follow.

You must learn to get over the limitation of getting a chance to listen only once in the test. You do not get a second chance, so make the most of the first time.

Identify areas where you falter in listening and improve on them.

Do some practice tests, this will help you get used to the tone and intonation of the native speakers of the country you want to move to.

Reading

The reading test has three sections and you need to answer a certain number of questions at the end of each section. You get 60 minutes in the reading test to do all of this.

Read as much as you can in your run-up to the tests.

Practice tests will help you get familiar with the various question types at the end of each section. Answering them will help you develop a strategy to tackle each question type.

In the 60 minutes, you will have to read the passages and try and answer the maximum number of questions. So, it is better that you learn to skim and scan through the passages to locate important information.

Underline keywords as you go, this will help you locate the answers to questions at the end of the passage.

Do not try to understand the passage, your motive is to find the relevant information to answer the questions.

Writing

The writing test consists of two sections, the first one is Letter writing for IELTS General Training & Report writing for IELTS Academic and the second task is essay writing which is common for both.

Do practice tests, this will help you get your grammar punctuation and spelling right and of course sharpen those writing skills. It will help you get familiar with essay topics.

Speaking

The speaking test involves face-to-face communication. Again, you can improve your speaking skills only with good practice. Take the help of friends and family who are fluent in the language for your practice. You can also practice by answering sample questions on everyday topics.
