Tips to score high in the TOEFL speaking section

To score well in the speaking section of the TOEFL, you should know about the section first. In the TEOFL iBT you will be required to listen and read prompts and give your response. The speaking section consists of four tasks which have a duration of over 17 minutes.

Here are some tips to do well in the speaking section of the TOEFL:

• Approach the speaking section with confidence and try to speak clearly and take your time before talking.
• Use vocabulary that you are familiar with. Do not use new words or expressions that you have not mastered. Though it is desirable to use an extensive vocabulary, use words and expressions that you are familiar with.
• Practice on how to structure your ideas. Learn different ways to present a subject, organize your ideas into two or three points, announce your point of view, build examples.
• Keep focused. You will be able to listen to the audio tracks only once during the test. These recordings are shorter than the ones in the listening section, but can last up to 2 minutes. Throughout the listening phase, it is very important to remain focused.
• Pay full attention. Your focus must be at its peak. You may need to write down as much detail as you can on your draft paper such as key phrases, terminology, and the general structure of the document or recording,
• Practice extensively. Practice taking notes first. Secondly, practice planning a response in 15 to 30 seconds by quickly listing your suggestions and structuring your thoughts. Finally, in a very short time, practice voicing your ideas: from 45 seconds to 1 minute.
