Expats in Dubai who have entered the UAE illegally or have overstayed their Visa duration are taking advantage of the amnesty program. The program allows the illegal residents to leave the country without any penalties. If not, they also have an option of applying for Visa of six months duration to allow them to look for employment.
This program, however, does not cater to people with pending legal cases or who have been blacklisted, as per the Arabian Business.
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreign affairs stated that 1,534 residents who had overstayed their Visa had applied for the program on the first day. 408 people had applied for renewal of their Visa, 416 had applied for cancellation and 260 wanted to change their status. The remaining 124 were absconding cases. The amnesty program has its centers in Al Aweer and Amer.
Most of the people who availed the amnesty program were pleased with the efficiency of the program.
The center at Al Aweer in Dubai would be able to handle 3000 people. It would be open till 31st October from 8 am to 8pm every day. The center would have 40 counters manned by officers speaking a variety of languages.
There are 43 centers in Amer where people can go to modify their Visa status. These centers would be able to process paperwork for Visa applications as well as clear absconding cases.
