The latest Times Higher Education (THE) ranking includes forty six United Kingdom universities among the highest two hundred higher learning establishments in Europe. They were scored on key factors together with teaching, research, influence and outlook for the longer term.
The United Kingdom is home to the top three universities in Europe, namely, Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London. University College London, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Edinburgh University and King’s College London also make the top ten, with ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology appearing at number four, making it the highest-ranked university outside of the UK, followed by University College London (5th), London School of Economics and Political Science (6th), the University of Edinburgh (7th) and King’s College London (8th), Karolinska Institute (9th) and LMU Munich (10th).
Other UK universities to make the top 50 were Manchester (18th), Bristol (23rd), Durham (24th), Glasgow (28th), Warwick (31st), St Andrews (35th), Exeter (38th), Sheffield (40th), Queen Mary, University of London (41st), and Southampton (joint 48th).
However, nipping at the UK’s heels are German universities, with thirty six places within the high two hundred. Its highest-rated university, LMU Munich, came in at number 10. Once it involves worldwide performance, however, the US dominates, occupying six of the highest 10 spots within the world rankings. The California Institute of Technology knocks Oxford off the highest spot and pushing Cambridge into fourth place.
