USA Dreamers

The US House of Representatives has cleared a bill offering citizenship pathway to 2 million plus immigrants who are undocumented including “Dreamers”. These were brought to the US as kids.

The vote for the 2019 American Dream and Promise Act was 237-to-187. It would offer 10 years of lawful residence to Dreamers if they fulfil specific requirements. They would then obtain Permanent Green Cards. This is after completing a minimum of 2 years of military service or higher education or after working for 3 years.

The initiative will offer long-awaited clearness to millions of Dreamers. They are stuck in a legal impasse amidst years of partisan strategy on the issue.

Freshman Representative Joe Neguse, D-Colo prompted standing ovation and cheers as he quoted former US President Ronald Reagan. He is the son of refugees from Eritrea. Neguse defended immigration as vital to the fabric of the US. He also referred to Dreamers as young individuals all across the nation who are not aware of any other home except the US.

Neguse said that these young individuals cannot be permitted to live life in fear and at risk.

The US House of Representatives was filled with cheers when the bill received the required votes. Just 7 members form the Republican Party supported all the 230 members of Democratic Party who were present to back the bill.

Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-California was the chief sponsor of the present bill. Allard said that this is the first time the Dream Act has been cleared by a chamber of the US Congress as a top priority for Democracy.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference that there must be nothing political or partisan about this legislation. She was flanked by other members from the Democratic Party and supporters of the bill. It is a matter of pride to have passed this bill, added Pelosi, as quoted by NDTV.

The latest bill will offer protections to individuals with Temporary Protected Status along with Dreamers. This has permitted people from Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador, and other nations to be prevented from deportation. This is to nations affected by natural calamities or engulfed in war.

Immigrants with TPS or deferred deportations can directly file an application for Green Cards. This is if they have been in the US for minimum 3 years, pass background checks, and had their status as of 2016 September.5 years after receiving the Green Cards, both groups can apply for US Citizenship.
