What is a good score on the GRE?

If you manage to get the below-specified scores in the different sections of the GRE, you have  a chance to be placed among the top 25% of the test candidates and will greatly improve your chances of getting admission in your desired university:

  • Verbal: 158 – 162
  • Quantitative: 159-164
  • Writing: 4.5

A good score will also be determined by the colleges you are targeting for your admission. Competitive study programs tend to have bigger score requirements while some schools will have lower school requirements.

A “good” GRE score is the percentile your target school would ideally like to see. Yet there are multiple factors involved in admission decisions and most of them are not decided by the GRE alone. And for GRE percentiles there are certainly some ground rules, no matter where you want to study.

It is better to know the percentile requirements for all the courses in top schools like Harvard, Stanford, and the like which look for higher percentiles of GRE score than your discipline might require.

Whether or not your score is good depends on the programs that you’re trying to get into. It may be enough for some programs. For others, you may need to take the examination again. It is better to know the requirements of your target school so that you will get to know the score you should aim for.

The GRE is a difficult test designed to distinguish strong candidates from the remainder of the pack. Success on the GRE is a matter of deciding which score you need to make sure your application is heard and taken into consideration by your target programs.

The advantage of the GRE is that you can write the exam more than once and keep trying for the best score. Most universities would consider only your best score. When you have taken the exam several times, you can opt to include the highest score in the applications to university.
