What you should know about the B1 level German language exam

Even though it is not mandatory to have knowledge of the German knowledge to find employment in the country, knowing the language greatly enhances your CV and greatly improves your chances of finding a job in Germany.

Those who know German have an edge and are given preference over those who do not know the language. This is not to say that you will not find a job if you do not know German. However, if you have a degree or vocational qualification, relevant work experience and know-how to speak basic German, then you have better chances of finding a job here.

A B1 level in German will enhance your professional qualifications. You will need to pass a German exam at that level from a recognized institute. The most widely recognized German language exam is the one conducted by the Goethe-Institut.

The Goethe-Institut was established in 1951 and has its headquarters in Munich. It is an autonomous non-profit organization (eV) funded by German state grants as well as payments from its own courses and exams.

Exam levels

There are six levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficiency/mastery) that follow the Standard European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The tests are composed of four parts: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Increasing part’s length and complexity increases as you move up the levels. The emphasis is on general language, including discussion on general interest topics as you progress to the higher levels.

Institute locations

Goethe-Institut has 59 Institutes in 98 countries worldwide.

In areas where there is no local Institute, it also partners with established educational institutions that fulfill its standards and where exams can be taken. The fees also vary according to region. You can take the entire examination as many times as you wish. Individual modules may be retaken an unlimited number of times for the B1 and C2 examinations.

Goethe German exam certificates have no expiration date.

B1 level exam

The B1 level test is “modular” in the sense that you do not need to sit (or pass) all four parts in one sitting.

The exam is broken down into four sections. They cover listening, reading, reading and writing skills.

Passing the B1 level exam

The flexible design of the German Goethe B1 exam means you can take one, two, three or all four sections in one day at a center. You will get one certificate for the entire test if you take and pass all four in one sitting or in two or more sessions within one year. To pass, you need to have at least a 60 percent score in a module.

Anyway, if you don’t take all of them at once you will get a certificate for the modules you’ve taken.

You can retake the entire examination, or one of the four parts, any number of times although the center where you took the examination may impose a mandatory interval before you can take the exam.
