IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Accepted by many countries for immigration and study purposes, IELTS is considered to be one of the pioneers of the 4 skills English language testing.

Which organization conducts the IELTS?
IELTS is together owned by the following –
- The British Council
- IDP: IELTS Australia
- Cambridge Assessment English
The British Council is the UK’s international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunity. The British Council has representation in 140+ countries across the world.
IDP: IELTS Australia is a division of IDP Education which is a leading international education organization offering student placement in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. 100+ IELTS test centres in more than 60 countries are managed by IDP: IELTS Australia.
Cambridge Assessment English is a part of the University of Cambridge. More than 5 million in 130 countries take Cambridge Assessment English exams every year.
Why take the IELTS?
The IELTS is required for the following –
IELTS for Study. The IELTS is accepted as an evidence of proficiency in the English language by around 10,000 institutions globally.
There are 2 types of IELTS suitable for study purposes –
- IELTS Academic. This is suitable for gaining entry for study at the undergraduate or postgraduate levels as well as for professional registration purposes. The IELTS Academic assesses your preparedness for beginning studying/training in an environment in which English language is used.
- IELTS General Training. This is for those that are applying for training/studying at below degree level, as well as for those looking at migration to countries such as – the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The IELTS General Training focuses on basic survival skills in the English language is workplace and broad social contexts.
Most of the people that take up the IELTS will be required to appear for the IELTS Academic for supporting their application for study overseas. However, you must check the entry requirements of the educational institutions prior to selecting between the IELTS Academic and the IELTS General Training.
Do keep in mind that you can nominate up to 5 organisations to which you can send your IELTS test results free of cost. If you have to send you test scores to additional organizations, you can ask your centre to do the same (provided your IELTS scores are valid). A fee will be levied for sending scores to more than 5 organisations.
IELTS for Work. In most countries where English is the primary language of communication, IELTS scores are accepted by various associations, professional bodies, and employers as evidence of skills for international graduates and applicants seeking professional registration.
The exact IELTS score required varies between different individual professional registration bodies.
Do keep in mind that if you have to submit IELTS score for vocational training, you will have to appear for the IELTS General Training.
