Most of the US voters support free trade and are also of the view that immigration helps more than harms the country, according to a poll conducted by NBC News/Wall Street Journal.

Carried out during 9-13 July, 1,000 registered voters were polled, of whom 450 owned cell phones only and 44 others who responded over a cell phone but own a landline phone too.

It showed that 56 percent of American voters were of the view that immigration aids the country more than it hurts it. Around 73 percent of Democrats, 64 percent of independents and 35 percent of Republicans supported immigration.

This was as against 35 percent of all voters in the US who felt that immigration is detrimental to the economy. Among the people who espoused this point of view were 55 percent of Republicans, 27 percent of independents and 21 percent of Democrats.

As far as free trade agreement was concerned, 55 percent of voters felt that free trade with overseas countries was beneficial for America as new markets have opened up which the US cannot afford to overlook in a globalised world. People concurring with this point of view are 51 percent of Republicans, 60 percent of Democrats and 54 percent of independents.

On the other hand, 38 percent of voters had an opposing point of view as they feel it has adversely affected manufacturing and other crucial industries.
