Canada to increase Parent and Grandparent Visa cap in 2019

Canada has flagged the increase in the number of Parent and Grandparent Visa in 2019. They wish to endorse family reunification. More parents and grandparents may now move to the country to live with their families.

Initially, the target was 5,000. However, reports suggest that it is to be increased fourfold to 20,000. Changes will be effective for applications for the sponsorship of parent and grandparent Visa programme in 2019.

As reported by ExpatForum.com, the decision is a result of continual demand from Immigrants. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is hoping to speed the application process as well. It will, in turn, reduce the waiting time.

In 2011, the inventory had application for 167,000 people. Over 7 years, it has gone down to 26,000 people. IRCC accepted 17,000 applications in the first round of 2018. To increase the numbers, they sent out a second round of invitations. Some randomly picked out sponsors were given the invitations. They had until October 5, 2018, to submit a complete application form.

Ahmed Hussen, the Immigration Minister indicated that the Government is making further changes to the application process. It is to improve the client experience. It will also streamline the existing process. The aim is to receive more applications in the coming years, he added.

Like previous years, In 2019 as well, the ‘Interest to Sponsor’ form will be available online. It is to make sure that potential sponsors can apprise IRCC on their interest in the Parent and Grandparent Visa. However, this time invitations will not be sent randomly. They will get the invitations based on the order in which IRCC receives the forms. The process would continue until the target of 20,000 applications is reached.

Mr. Hussen further added that over the last few years they have eliminated the backlog of applications. Also, they brought some essential changes to the Parent and Grandparent Visa process. He said their focus is on helping families live together in Canada. Family reunification would encourage more Overseas Immigrants to migrate to the country.

IRCC is planning to admit 20,000 parents and grandparents in 2018. This number will increase to 20,500 in 2019 and 21,000 in 2020, Mr. Hussen confirmed.
