Chartered Engineer in Australia

Recognition as a Chartered Engineer [CEng] can greatly boost your career.

A CEng develops answers to engineering problems making use, either of existing or new, technologies in innovative ways.

As a CEng, you can be involved in:

  • Developing such technology
  • Pioneering different engineering services
  • Introducing more efficient techniques for production
  • Promoting advanced methods and designs

There is no course as such to become a CEng. To be known as a Chartered Engineer, you will have to get yourself registered with the appropriate authority.

In the UK, it is the Engineering Council that assesses technicians and engineers against certain standards and awards professional titles, such as:

  • Information and Communications Technology Technician [ICTTech]
  • Engineering Technician [EngTech]
  • Incorporated Engineer [IEng]
  • Chartered Engineer [CEng]

Note: – For further details, refer the Information and Communications Technology Technician [ICTTech] Standard, and the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence [UK-SPEC].

In Australia, on the other hand, it is Engineers Australia that can grant you the title of Chartered Engineer.

Engineers Australia recognizes an applicant as a Chartered Engineer in any of the occupational categories of:

Professional Engineer

Engineering Technologist

Engineering Associate

To be recognized as a Chartered Engineer by Engineers Australia, an applicant will have to go through a 6-step process. Log on to Engineers Australia and proceed as per the steps given below:

STEP 1: Self-Assessment

  • Select your occupational category
  • Select your Area of Practice that you want to become chartered in. Pick the one that is best aligned to your particular Area of Practice.
  • Enter your Level of Ability for each of the 16 competencies. The level will be either Functional or Above.

You can rate yourself as ‘developing’ in any of the competencies. Information submitted can be updated later.

STEP 2: Industry Review

  • Check with an experienced manager or mentor to get an honest opinion as to whether you are ready for being chartered.
  • For submitting your industry review, you need a reviewer* that will support the ratings given by you to each of the 16 competencies [in Step 1].
  • You can also select multiple reviewers.
  • Tell briefly as to why you have given the specific rating to yourself, what evidence you will be submitting later, and why you think that evidence will help. Evidence should not be more than 10 years old at the time of submission.
  • Once you have been rated as Functional/Above in all of the 16 competencies, you will get the “Apply for Chartered” option on your Industry Review profile.
  • Now, you are ready for enrolment.

*Usually, Industry Reviewers are chartered members of Engineers Australia or those with 7+ years of relevant experience.

STEP 3: Enroll for Chartered

  • You will need soft copies of your Photo ID and a latest detailed CV. You will also need a Credit Card for making the payment.
  • For enrollment, you must be a Member of Engineers Australia.
  • You must also have 5+ years of post-graduate experience in the industry.
  • Confirm Area of Practice, upload documents and read and confirm Terms and Conditions.
  • Make the payment. A confirmation email will be sent.
  • Once an Assessor has gone through your application, you will be contacted directly – via a phone call – to discuss with you the documentary evidence.

STEP 4: Chartered Evidence

  • Show the work you have done.
  • An assessor will place a phone call to you for discussing the evidence that you have proposed to provide. You can make use of the phone call to ask for answers to any questions that you might be having regarding the process.
  • Have with you the list of evidence that you have proposed to submit.
  • The assessor will go over the evidence with you and might then suggest certain refinements or alternative evidence.
  • An email will be sent for uploading the evidence.

Do keep in mind that you might be asked for additional evidence as well.

STEP 5: Professional Interview

  • Before you attend the interview, do go through the Code of Ethics on Engineers Australia website.
  • Interview to be held either in-person or via Skype.
