read aloud

‘Read Aloud’ is one of the sections in PTE Speaking Test. In this task, a small passage is displayed on the screen. A reverse timer of about 35 to 40 seconds starts right away. This time varies upon the length of the passage. Right after the timer ends, you’ll hear a beep in the microphone. You will get 35 to 40 seconds more wherein you need to read the given passage aloud.

Here are some tips to help you get started with the preparation for this PTE Speaking Test section.

  • Skim the text

You get only 30 to 40 seconds before the recording commences. This time is enough for you to skim the text. This will help you understand the flow of the text.

  • Speak clearly

Often test takers fall victim to anxiety and fear. Eventually, they lose their confidence. It affects their fluency. Also, they are not understood clearly.

It is advisable that you speak at your natural pace. This way the examiner can easily understand your pronunciation and accent during the PTE Speaking Test.

  • Focus on Fluency

30 to 40 seconds is enough time for you to read the text aloud.  Do not be in a rush and speak fast. Instead, be fluent while you speak. Moreover, if you don’t speak up within 3 seconds, the microphone will be turned off.

  • Mind the punctuation

‘Read aloud’ section aims at testing your intonation, clarity of speech and fluency. You should never ignore commas, semicolon and full stops. The examiner will have difficulty understanding the text in this case. Intonate well and speak in a composed manner.

  • Practice more and more

Use a newspaper along with a voice recorder to practice. Read a 50 words paragraph aloud and record your voice. Then play it back. It will help you identify the errors you usually make. That includes the words you are not comfortable with, the rate of speech and fluency. This will help you excel at the overall PTE Speaking Test as well, as suggested by The Times of India.

Now that you know the strategies, you can put all your efforts into bettering your score. Practicing is the only way to success. And hence take mock tests, evaluate yourself and keep bettering your performance. All the best!
