The 10 most desirable companies in Singapore

Google fever refuses to die down, as students in Singapore admit they view Google as the most attractive company to work in, echoing their counterparts from the rest of the world.

That was one of the key findings from Universum’s Singapore Top 100 IDEAL Employers student survey, which polled more than 9,300 participating students from the country’s four main universities, SMU, SIM, NTU and NUS.

Both business and engineering students ranked Google as their most preferred employer in 2015.

While Singapore Airlines came in at second place for business students, it was ranked third by those in the engineering faculty – beaten by A*STAR.

The big four accounting and auditing firms continued to have a big pull for Singapore’s business students – namely, PwC, EY, KPMG and Deloitte – coming in at fifth, sixth, seventh and eleventh respectively.

When it came to engineering students, all four of the biggest FMCG companies in the top 30 made healthy strides in the rankings. This included P&G (rising from 13th to 10th ), Unilever, (rising from 17th to 12th), Nestle (rising from 33rd to 17th ), and Johnson & Johnson, (rising from 42nd to 25th).

Regardless of their field of study however, local students emphasised on the need for a friendly-work environment in companies, deeming it as the most attractive quality in a potential employer.

High future earnings was the second most desirable trait in an ideal company, followed by professional training and development and a good reference for future career respectively.

“The results from Singapore’s generation-Y data this year reinforces that Millennial trends in Singapore are intrinsic,” Rachele Focardi, senior vice president of employer branding and talent strategy, APAC, Universum, said.

“Students no longer want to join an industry, brand or opportunity, they want to join an environment. Finding the perfect employer or employee has become more like finding the perfect partner, the more you’re able to share about yourself and what you’re like, the better the match is likely to be.”

The report stressed having the right working environment was indeed integral for companies, especially as almost two thirds (65.99%) of local students listed  having a work-life balance as one of their top career goals.

This was followed by being “secure or stable in my job” (56.13%), and being “dedicated to a cause or to feel that I’m serving the greater good”(40.4%).
