The PTE essay writing question in the writing section of the exam is a challenge to students because they will have to know about the right way to express their ideas.

In this question, you will be given a prompt of around 2-3 lines. Your job is to compose an essay of no less than 200 words and no more than 300 words based on this prompt. You are given twenty minutes to complete the task and the prompt will be academic in nature.

Time management is important for this task as you will need to plan, write and proofread your essay.

In this question, there are many parts where you can receive points. You can receive a maximum of 3 points for the content, a maximum of 2 points for the formal requirements, and a maximum of 2 points for development, structure and coherence.

You can also receive a maximum score of 2 points for grammar, a maximum of 2 points for general linguistic range, a maximum of 2 points for vocabulary range, and a maximum of 2 points for no spelling errors.

There is a total of 15 points that you can pick up in this question type. But you must practice well for this question.

Problems faced by students

  • Students do not understand the prompt.
  • Students appear to ramble endlessly, rather than recognize and expand on a few key points.
  • Students write about the topic too casually.

You can avoid these issues if you practice for the exam and adopt some tips and tricks.

Develop your vocabulary

The better your vocabulary, the easier it will be for you to grasp the question, and build your essay. The best way to develop vocabulary is to read good content, like books, magazines etc. An added advantage to reading is that you will be introduced to new ideas and concepts – which could be helpful while writing your essay.

Build your grammar skills

The key grammar components you are checked on include the structure of sentences, punctuation and capitalization. You will need to learn how to properly use verbs and tenses, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions and so on. Once again, reading is one of the easiest ways to do this.

Use functional words and phrases

These are words/phrases you can use in your essay, whatever the subject. They can assist in introducing/concluding a concept, illustrating a distinction, similarity, continuity or the subject change.

Practice as much as you can

Practice at least three or four mock assessments-or as many as you can. Make sure you train under conditions of review, like word-limit and time limit.

You should be able to apply your vocabulary and grammar skills by practice. You’ll also become acquainted with the essay prompts/topic styles. You’ll also learn how to write a 300-word essay within the appropriate time limit.

Get your essays reviewed by a teacher to know and correct your drawbacks.
